KUALA LUMPUR, November, 2002
JESCOMEAO Special Assistant, Mr. Augy Loorthusamy, participated in the
World
Association of Christian Communicators Asia Region (AR-WACC) Assembly in
Kuala Lumpur and a subsequent seminar on Media Violence and Challenges to
Modern Society.
There were around 40 participants at the WACC Asia seminar. Fr. Iswarahadi
from Puskat
Audio Visual Studio in Yogyakarta also attended. Randy Naylor, the
Secretary General of
WACC was there, and Augy briefed him on what Catholic communicators were
doing in the
region. Augy pointed out areas where ecumenical collaboration is advisable
under their new 5 year program. The Vice President of AR-WACC is Mr.
Sorono of Kanisius Publishing house, Yogyakarta.
The seminar on Media Violence and the Challenges to Modern Society was
organised by the
Asia/Pacific Broadcast Development group in Kuala Lumpur where a JESCOMEAO
colleague, Mr. Marcel Gomez works. It was co-sponsored by the Frederick
Eibert Stiftung
from Germany, UNESCO, British Coucil and a Swiss Group. Augy was invited
through
SIGNIS and the Director of AIBD in Germany.
Participants were Academics, Media Professionals (Broadcasters and
Journalists),
Government Ministers, a few NGO's. AMIC was also present there. There were
some 20
papers presented. Augy found the seminar very useful and made many
contacts. One of
the highlights was Augy's meeting with the representative from East Timor,
Mariano Jose
Lopes da Cruz, who is in charge of Media in that country. He knows Fr.
Filomeno and is also
the member of the Parish Council of the Bishop. He was happy to know of
Jesuit
communication work in East Timor.
