A.
Regional Production, Distribution, and Development:
Continued daily broadcast of KPS English
Conversation series in China over Phoenix Satellite TV Channel (claiming
access to 42 million households). Accompanying website (www.unclejerry.tv)
has posted all recent programs (nearly 1,000 video clips) on the site.
It is now developing a tutorial program, a web board, links to other
websites (Radio Veritas Mandarin, Chinese Catholic Church, etc.) and is
planning a chat room.
Jesuit
Communications in Manila: Music videos of religious songs; award
winning short film, The Bell; radio talk show series and drama
serial; weekly TV Mass, Sundays for Skeptics; Jesuit Assistancy
vocation promotion video (in process).
Jesuit Communications, Manila: Jescom Regional Multimedia Training
Center is nearing completion. Curriculum planning is needed.
Jesuit Communications (Manila) with KPS and (Taipei): The Bridge
EAPI series. A set of six lectures by EAPI professors, in English,
Vietnamese, Burmese, and Mandarin. Nearly 500 videotapes of the English
version have been sold. The other language versions are being prepared
for distribution on VCD.
Puskat Audio-visual Studio, Yogyakarta, Indonesia: religious program
series broadcast twice a month on Indosiar satellite; new community
radio station.
Asian
Exile—The Gamble of Asia’s Migrant Laborers
was aired during a 90-minute prime time TV special on Taiwan’s Public TV
Channel. The video was followed by a panel discussion with church and
civic leaders.
B. Training Courses and Planning:
Colombo, Sri Lanka: Second Media Education seminar for priests,
religious, lay leaders (Augy).
Lyon, France:
Religious TV Production Training module at CREC-AVEX, two weeks (Jerry).
Vietnam: Educational TV producers in the Mekong Delta Region; one month;
Jerry and Augy were two of 5 trainers.
Cambodia: Preparation (remote) for communication training courses for
priests, religious, seminarians, laity (Augy, Jerry).
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: Preparation (remote) for seminary communication
training (Augy).
Manila: Media awareness seminars for Ateneo Elementary and High School
teachers and parents (Augy).
Bangkok: Second stage of Asian Women Communicators formation course (Augy).
Taipei: one month internship training at KPS for Korean Jesuit
scholastic Dominic Kim, SJ (Jerry)
Taipei: one month internship training at KPS for East Timorese Jesuit

East Timor: Training of personnel at the new Catholic TV production
Center in Dili (Ruedi Hofmann, and Dedomao da Gomez of Puskat Audio

Fiji: Communications training for seminarians and laity, 3 courses (Augy).
Myanmar: Three communication seminars: January in Taunggu and May in
Yangon for pastoral workers; and October in Yangon for seminary
professors (Augy).

Rethinking
Democratization of the Media—Pathways Beyond Critical Media Education:
Symposium organized by SIGNIS-Asia and WACC in collaboration with ACN,
JESCOMEAO, and PAME. Augy was main organizer; Jerry presented a paper.
Association of Media Assisted Learning and Teaching
Conference, Seoul, Korea. Jerry presented the KPS English TV series and
website.
WACC Asian
Regional Assembly,
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Augy participated.
Media
Violence and Challenges to Modern Society
seminar, Kuala
Lumpur, organized by the Asian/Pacific Institute for Broadcast
Development (AIBD). Augy participated.
D. Networking:
During the 2001 meeting of the International Study Commission for
Religion, Media, and Culture in Bangkok, Augy, Jerry and other Asian
colleagues launched the Asian Communication Network (ACN) which
subsequently developed an organizational structure, including a
constitution, by-laws, Ecclesiastical Trustees, Board of Directors,
Office Bearers, consultants, logo, and website. ACN continues to grow
and develop, is an international member of SIGNIS, and was active in
organizing the symposium Rethinking Democratization of the Media,
Manila, 2002 (See No. 5 above).
E. On-going Projects:
Assistancy Vocation
Video: Funding for this production, which is being carried out by the
Jesuit Communication Foundation in Manila, has been allocated by the
JCEAO. Location production in Micronesia, Cambodia, Indonesia, Hong
Kong and the Philippines has been completed. Supplementary footage is
being collected from other Assistancy units. Francis Alvarez predicts
final completion around mid-2003.
Development and promotion of the interactive website which supplements
the English TV Series for China.
Development of the JESCOMEAO website.
Development of the video production unit and community radio project in
East Timor.
Supplying distribution outlets in Mainland China with religious
audio-visual materials.
F. New Projects:
Audio-visual production training for personnel of Faith Press in
Shijiazhuang, China (JesCom Philippines, KPS).
Assist Taipei Ricci Institute in launching Renlai, a new
international Chinese monthly journal of social and cultural thought.
Assist JesCom Philippines in planning training modules and promoting
regional courses at the new Jescom Regional Multimedia Training Center.
Explore new TV broadcast opportunities in Shanghai, China (e.g., Yang
Guang Satellite TV Channel).
